Daniel Chandler (2001) & Steve Neale (1995) (genre)

Daniel Chandler argues that the word genre comes from the French (originally latin) word for 'kind' or 'class'. The term is widely used in rhetoric, literary theory, media theory to refer to a distinctive type of 'text'

However, Steve Neal stresses "genres are not 'systems' but are processes of systematisation". They are dynamic and evolve over time

Steve Neale argues that pleasure is derived from 'repetition and difference'. We can derive pleasure from observing how the conventions of genre are manipulated (Abercrombie 1996). We can also enjoy the stretching of a genre in new directions and the consequent shifting of our expectations.
