Films used to be made involving a famous artist as the protagonist. The films involved the artist(s) singing in order to promote their music. Elvis Presley used to do this. His fans had to go to the cinema to see him perform as he was restricted to just performing in America.
Cliff Richard also did this in the film 'Summer Holiday'
In the films they both played characters. When The Beatles made their film 'Help', they decided to just play themselves as they didn't want to seem fake and wanted their fans to see them as they are.
